Going to a park is proving to help individuals cope with a host of health issues. Anxiety, depression, attention deficit disorder as well as chronic illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure, all improved by spending time outside moving. That’s right, it’s as simple as visiting a park.  While doctors are now writing Parks RX prescriptions for patients, consider writing your own Parks RX for 2018. See this clip for the 3 things to listen to in the woods:… Continue reading »

I enjoy going to a very affordable gym in my neighborhood. The equipment is new and well-maintained, the staff are very pleasant, media opportunities are available to combat boredom on the treadmill, and it is very clean. Most people move about the gym focused on their workout with a quick nod to those they know or recognize as a gym compadre. All of that makes for a good workout – with one big exception – those that don’t follow basic… Continue reading »

I heard one of our team members raving about the deviled eggs on our new MedInsteadofMeds.com website so decided it was my duty as a good colleague to try them out. Oh my gosh. They are my new fav. On busy work days when everything seems to be a whirlwind, you need a quick (and healthy!) lunch option.  When you pull these eggs out of your lunchbox (with a cooler pack of course) your day is made.  As you will… Continue reading »

I have not many bought many bikes. I was recently faced with a couple of aging bikes at my parents house. They live in an area where biking is really easy with bike lanes and neighborhood streets. I decided to go to a nearby famous retail store to purchase new bikes. After making two fine selections, I pulled them out of the rack. I pushed the bikes from the back of the large store to the front to pay. The… Continue reading »

Summer means lots of time outdoors. I recently had the opportunity to spend some time with my 5-year-old great nephew. As a 3-year-old, we had visited the park very near my home.  Even though the park was simple, he continued to talk about our visit often, reminding me of the fun we had. At a recent visit, he asked once again to go back to the park.  So, off go two adults and five-year-old holding hands walking to the park. The… Continue reading »

Eating more fruit is one of the hallmarks of the Mediterranean lifestyle. If you are like me, you sometimes get stuck in a fruit rut – apples, oranges, and the occasional banana. I love all fruit but just get in fruit jags that don’t make my fruit eating very exciting.   Enter kiwi. I love kiwi and I just forgot about it until I saw a big box of the cute brown furry fruit in the produce aisle. They are… Continue reading »

I look in my lunch box some days and see the yogurt I have brought as part of my lunch and I just can’t…. I have selected the flavor and even new brands but I just cannot face another container of yogurt. Here is a quick alternative when you have had it up to here with yogurt. Refried Bean Roll Up ¼ cup canned refried beans (choose a brand that is fat free) 1-2 tablespoons shredded sharp cheddar cheese Optional… Continue reading »

My extended family eats healthy, maybe not super healthy but moderately so. Whenever the whole crew gathers, 10 of us, for special occasions, deciding what to serve can be challenging. Just recently, I decided to try roasted vegetables just to see if they we would be at least tolerated. It was my Mother’s 81st birthday dinner and I knew she would love them, just not sure about my brother, sister in law, nieces and nephews. I threw together a mixture… Continue reading »

Often we are challenged to drink enough water daily. Even Hillary Clinton has struggled to drink enough water leading to dehydration. I too have had my struggles. That is, until I discovered the YETI brand products. You may be skeptical that YETI is just another insulated cup product that comes with a big price tag, I know I was. That is until I tried it. Within a week, I went from owning no YETI products and thinking they were hype to rushing to… Continue reading »

Summertime often gives us more opportunities to be physically active in new places. Whether walking in a new place or in your same old neighborhood at home, remember some simple rules to keep you and your family safe. When walking on a road, walk on the left facing the traffic. When walking on a path or a sidewalk that does not allow cars, walk on the right. NO TEXTING – this should go without saying but just yesterday I saw someone… Continue reading »
